Gov’t Distances Itself from Idea of Historian Schmidt on Universal Conscription

In an opinion piece, historian Mária Schmidt wrote that the reintroduction of universal conscription should be reconsidered. The Ministry of Defense has officially responded to this, saying that Mária Schmidt’s opinion is a private opinion “which in no way coincides with the government’s position.”

In her latest opinion piece published in , Mária Schmidt wrote the following: “We must continue reforms in the areas of health, education, and defense. We must reconsider the reintroduction of universal conscription (for men and women), because war, as we can see, is by no means extinct in the world, not even in Europe, and also takes place at our borders.”

The Ministry of Defense responded to the historian’s article with a single sentence:

Mária Schmidt’s position on universal conscription is her private opinion and in no way coincides with the government’s position.
