Beginning in September 2025, public education institutions in Hungary will be eligible for targeted financial support to help students returning from abroad reintegrate into the local school system.
A government decree published in the Hungarian Gazette on Tuesday, outlines the new program that aims to assist students in grades 1 through 8 who previously studied in foreign, non-Hungarian-language schools.
Under the new measure, schools that provide personalized academic support to returning students can receive 130,000 forints (326 euros) per student each month. To qualify, institutions must offer at least five hours of individual preparation per week, aimed at helping these students catch up academically and adapt to the Hungarian curriculum and learning environment.
The support is designed for students who have spent at least one of the two preceding academic years entirely outside the Hungarian education system in a foreign-language institution.
For the 2025 academic year, the government has allocated 234 million forints (586,000 euros) to fund the initiative. This amount will rise to 450 million forints (1.1 million euros) in 2026. Schools can receive the subsidy for each student for up to ten months during the school year. If the weekly support provided is fewer than five hours, the funding will be reduced proportionally.
