During the forthcoming six-month EU Presidency, Hungary will continue to work to strengthen the EU’s relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó revealed in Budapest on Tuesday.

Welcoming UAE’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister Szijjártó said that his counterpart had last visited Hungary eight years ago in 2016, and that the current visit was of special significance in several respects. He stressed that in the current challenging global circumstances, there is a great need for responsible countries like the UAE to play a stabilizing role in their own region. In this context, he praised the country’s role in bringing the Abraham Accords to fruition, expressing the hope that the Middle East region could soon return to the spirit of the agreement.

He also welcomed the fact that

Abu Dhabi is now a nuclear energy user, which opens new horizons in bilateral cooperation, including in the field of training and research, as nuclear reactors have been in operation in Hungary for more than 50 years.

Szijjártó also pointed out that Hungary has always valued the role of the UAE in the fight against terrorism, which is very important for the security of the region and the world.

Finally, he touched on this year’s Hungarian EU Council Presidency, saying: “Although not everyone is happy about it, this is what the rotation system is all about.” He added: “I am confident that during the six months of the presidency we will be able to further strengthen the relations between the UAE and the European Union.”
