Government Supports Hungarian Corporate Activities in Russia

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.04.12.

“Economic cooperation between Hungary and Russia has a long and successful tradition,” wrote the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on his Facebook page, Magyar Nemzet reports.

Péter Szijjártó announced that several Hungarian companies have established strong demand in Russia, leading to a high requirement for Hungarian products in Russian markets.

“We have recently met with the heads of Hungarian companies present in the Russian market, as it is an important foreign trade goal of ours to further develop Hungarian-Russian economic relations in areas not affected by sanctions,” he declared.

The Minister emphasized that Hungary’s exports to Russia exceeded USD 1B last year and that the presence of major Hungarian companies like MOL, OTP, and Richter in the country can provide a sense of security to other Hungarian companies.

Companies from the pharmaceutical, food, water, health, construction, and agricultural sectors have expressed their willingness and intention to remain in the Russian market, and the government provides them with the necessary support, Szijjártó said.

Regarding trade relations between EU countries and Russia, a distinction must be made between the war rhetoric and political activism surrounding the introduction of new sanctions packages on the one hand, and tangible economic interests on the other, the politician noted.

New figures show that France is quietly paying more and more for Russian gas, while President Emmanuel Macron is positioning himself as one of the staunchest defenders of Ukraine, reports Politico. France is not the only exception: at least nine EU countries continue to buy Russian LNG, according to supply data.
