The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) will receive additional state funding to expand its staff at Röszke, Tompa and Hercegszántó (all in southern Hungary) and to purchase modern technical equipment, according to a government decision. The improvements will speed up border crossings at the Hungarian-Serbian border, reports Világgazdaság.
The government has been advised by the working party on border control to purchase technical equipment and increase the number of financial police officers on the Hungarian-Serbian border.
On this basis, the government will provide the National Tax and Customs Administration with a total of HUF 3.7 billion (EUR 9 million) in several stages between 2024 and 2026 for the purchase of equipment needed to reduce the waiting time for border crossings and for measures to increase staff numbers.
The number of officers serving at Röszke will be increased by 78, while the border police staff at the border posts in Tompa and Hercegszántó will be increased by 125 in three stages between 2024 and 2025. The government has also earmarked an additional HUF 1.9 billion (EUR 4.8 million) in permanent, base-building funding for the NAV from 2026.
This is a step to address a long-standing problem.
In 2022, for example, both cars and buses heading to Serbia had to wait for three hours at the motorway and road border crossing at Röszke. At the entry side, cars had to wait two hours, buses one hour. At the road border crossing point at Ásotthalom, travelers had to wait two hours on the exit side and one hour on the entry side. For faster border crossing, motorists were advised to use the border crossing points at Tiszasziget or Kübekháza.
