Hungary’s governing party, Fidesz, is advocating for a national consultation to gather public opinion on critical economic issues, including wage increases, support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), housing, and family allowances.
Máté Kocsis announced the proposal during a break at the Fidesz-KDNP’s parliamentary group meeting in Esztergom (northern Hungary). He emphasized the need to engage the public on these sensitive topics to guide government policy.
The backdrop to this proposal is the need for new economic solutions in light of the changing landscape following the COVID pandemic and the ongoing war. Mr. Kocsis noted that Hungary’s economic prospects are currently favorable, providing an opportunity for measures to strengthen the economy further. He also criticized European leadership for what he described as a “trade cold war,” advocating for Hungary’s economic neutrality based on openness to both Eastern and Western markets.
Central to the proposed consultation are discussions on wage increases, with Máté Kocsis aiming for a minimum wage of HUF 400K (EUR 999) and an average wage of HUF 1M (EUR 2,498).
Support for SMEs is a priority, as the government seeks to assist these businesses through capital injections and new financial instruments. Additionally, family support initiatives will include proposals to double the family tax allowance and explore further assistance options, along with plans for affordable housing, such as dormitories and low-interest loans for young homebuyers.
The proposed national consultation reflects Fidesz’s commitment to addressing economic challenges while seeking public input on significant issues affecting the Hungarian population. Engaging citizens in this dialogue is essential, especially given the anticipated debates and potential pushback from Brussels.
