Árpád János Potápi, Minister of State for National Policy of the Prime Minister’s Office, met with representatives of Hungarian associations active in Spain and Madrid over the weekend.
Summing up his visit to the Iberian capital, the State Secretary said that during meetings he had provided information to his local partners on the Hungarian government’s current national policy program, with a special focus on initiatives aimed at supporting the diaspora.
It was suggested that a Hungarian House should be established in Madrid, where Hungarian groups could organize events and weekend school programs. This could even be combined with the opening of a Hungarian café or restaurant, so that the Hungarian brand would be present in the Spanish capital and the two institutions could work in support of each other, said Árpád János Potápi.
During his visit, the State Secretary visited a weekend Hungarian kindergarten and the weekend school of the Madách Association. There, in addition to the primary and senior classes, a Hungarian language course is also organized for Spanish fathers. In addition to the Sunday school, several cultural programs are organized to bring local Hungarians together and to introduce their Spanish friends to Hungarian values and customs.
Árpád János Potápi said that the Madách Association was founded in 2014 with the aim of bringing together Hungarians living in and around Madrid, strengthening their Hungarian identity, promoting the preservation and cultivation of the Hungarian language and providing opportunities to practice their traditions.
The association is committed to strengthening the sense of Hungarian national identity of children of Hungarian origin living in Spain. The association, which has more than 100 families in the capital, has been a member of the National Association of Hungarian Organizations in Western Europe since 2019 and also participates in the Hungarian Diaspora Council.
There are currently around 2,000 Hungarians living in Madrid and 20,000 in Spain, the State Secretary added.
