On Monday, the State Secretary for National Policy visited the disaster-stricken town of Praid (Parajd), Romania, where he learned about the severity of the situation caused by the flooding of the salt mine. He then spoke with local entrepreneurs involved in tourism and hospitality at a public forum and assured them of the Hungarian Government’s support.
“We were shocked to hear about what happened in Praid. Many Hungarian tourists have visited here in recent decades, and Praid is very important to us. What is happening with the salt mine is a tragedy, hence it was obvious that we would help,” Lőrinc Nacsa told MTI after the public forum.
He said that in recent days he had been in close contact with the authorities and the leaders of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) about how to provide assistance, and on Monday, he personally gathered information and assured the locals that they could count on the Hungarian Government. Referring to the Day of National Unity (June 4), he said that Hungarians always stick together and help each other.
He said that as a first step, the Hungarian authorities could help organize a campaign to save tourism and would participate in the launch of the initiative introduced by the Harghita County Council.
This is the first step that can save this year’s tourist season, as the Sóvidék (“Salt Region”) and Praid regions have other attractions besides the salt mine that are worth promoting,”
he emphasized.
In addition, Hungary has offered professional assistance to the Romanian authorities in the field of water management and disaster protection, as it has extensive experience in flood management.
This means both equipment and expertise, he detailed.
Support for tourism and economic development may also be needed to strengthen local businesses, he added. He said that the Hungarian Government will prepare a report on the experiences in Praid, the needs and problems of local tourism entrepreneurs and residents in relation to the current situation, and based on this, they will decide on further ways to provide assistance so that tourism can continue to operate and the village can flourish in the coming period.
These decisions, directions, and methods of assistance will always be made in consultation with the locals and the political representatives of the Hungarian community in Transylvania,”
Nacsa emphasized.

In Praid, he also announced that on June 4, Day of National Unity, the public media will help flood victims in Szeklerland and the community affected by the mining disaster in Praid with a full day of fundraising.
Nacsa also visited flood-stricken Boroșneu Mare (Nagyborosnyó) and announced 10 million forints (25,000 euros) in emergency aid to help the flood-damaged communities.
This will be provided by the State Secretariat for National Policy through the Reformed Church.
As he said, this will enable those affected to mitigate the damage caused by the floods and purchase items that are essential for their basic needs. In addition, they have started distributing disinfectants in cooperation with the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, and non-perishable food is also arriving in the area.
