Government Offers Europe’s Largest State-run Summer Camps for Families in Need

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.07.30.

Europe’s largest and most complex state-subsidized camp program is the Elizabeth Camps, with 1.4 million campers expected to participate since its establishment in 2012 until the end of 2024, the Minister of Culture and Innovation stressed.

Speaking at a press conference in Zánka (northern shore of Lake Balaton) on Monday, Balázs Hankó said that this year, the state has supported the Elizabeth Camps with HUF 9 billion (EUR 22.8 million). This summer, more than 40,000 children are able to spend their holidays in the camps in Zánka, Fonyódliget (southern shore of Lake Balaton) and Transylvania. Balázs Hankó noted that a new location had been added to the list of Elizabeth Camps: from now on, therapeutic camps will  be held in Zalaszabar (at Kis-Balaton).

The minister added that around 3,000 young Hungarians from abroad will also come to Lake Balaton this summer.

The safety of the children in the Elizabeth Camps is ensured by a professional security system and a well-trained supervision, he said.

Fact

The Elizabeth Program was set up by the Hungarian government in 2012 to implement programs related to social services, such as the Elizabeth Camps scheme. The program provides discounted holidays under a social holiday scheme, with a particular focus on supporting large families, people with disabilities and pensioners who would not otherwise be able to afford them.

The Elizabeth Camps are available not only in summer but all year round for families in need. Thanks to the program, children can participate in sleep-away camps, family camps, and during the summer day-care camps.
