Hungary has offered disaster relief assistance to Georgia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced on Facebook on Saturday. According to reports, at least 18 people died and many are still missing after a landslide devastated the popular resort in a valley in Shovi on Thursday night.

Péter Szijjártó wrote that in recent days, and even in the last few hours, Hungary itself has been confronted with the harsh manifestations of weather turning into complete madness. Furthermore, storms, heavy rain, and flash floods are having serious consequences across Europe as well. In Georgia, the unprecedented rainfall has led to landslides in the northern part of the country, where there is no precedent for this kind of disaster, leaving many dead and missing, and causing huge damage.

“I called my Georgian colleague to express our sympathy and offer Hungarian disaster relief assistance in case of need. Ilia Darchiashvili was grateful for the offer, appreciated it as a real gesture of friendship and indicated that they would come to us if their own resources were exhausted,” wrote the Foreign Minister.

The Speaker of the National Assembly sent a telegram of condolences to his Georgian counterpart on the natural disaster, reported Hirado.hu. László Kövér wrote that he was deeply shocked to learn of the landslide that had occurred in the Racha region of Georgia earlier this week, claiming the lives of several people. On behalf of the Hungarian Parliament, he expressed his heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathy to the relatives of the victims and wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.

Hungarian President Katalin Novák also offered her condolences to the Georgian President. She wrote on her Twitter account that Hungary is ready to provide disaster relief assistance to mitigate the damage.

Severe weather also occurred in neighboring countries. Emergency services were deployed in several areas of Austria and Slovenia on Sunday after days of heavy rain, flooding, and landslides. Due to the weather, severe floods are also expected on two rivers in western Hungary. The Dráva and Mura rivers are both reported to be experiencing massive flooding, with water levels exceeding the level of flood alert III.
