From January 1, a new bottle return policy will come into practice. 2,000 machines have already been installed across the country. In places without a machine, a manual return system will be used.
Metal, plastic, and glass beverage containers put on the market in Hungary will be given a new barcode. In the future, there will be two main differentiations between packages: single- and multi-way.
Multi-way bottles will be reusable up to 18-20 times.
It is important to keep the bottles in undamaged condition for return.
The minimum charge for returnable containers will be HUF 50 (EUR 0.13) per unit.
The money can be received in the form of vouchers or donated to charity. Later, a bank transfer system might also be developed.
“The amount of waste generated in Hungary is more than 400 kilos per capita. Only one third of this is recycled, the rest is buried. Now the aim, partly due to EU regulations, is to get access to good quality industrial raw materials so that this recycling rate is significantly improved,” explained former President János Áder, Chairman of the Blue Planet Foundation.
The aim is to reclaim up to 90 percent of the three billion bottles in circulation each year by 2029.
