Government Expands Victim Support with New Centers

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.28.

Justice Minister Bence Tuzson announced the government’s goal to establish a victim support center in every county seat. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance victim support through a network of centers, helplines, and services involving various stakeholders, including police and social organizations.

Currently, there are several victim support centers across Hungary, with new ones opening to address high caseloads. The newly inaugurated center in Újbuda, 9th District of Budapest, is the second center in the capital, reflecting the city’s higher demand. A new center will soon open in Győr (Western Hungary).

In his speech, the Minister emphasized the importance of these centers in helping victims recover and resume normal lives. He stated,

the aim is to enable people who have been victimized to continue living their lives normally.”

He also highlighted the need for legal reforms to protect victims, noting: “There is still work needed to ensure that individuals with a history of abuse are not allowed to hold public roles.”

The new center in Újbuda marks a significant step in providing accessible support for victims in a densely populated area. The government’s commitment to victim support is evident in the ongoing efforts to improve services and ensure victims are not left on their own. The expansion of victim support centers and related services represents a crucial development in providing aid to crime victims, aiming to offer them a reliable support system during challenging times.
