Goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi’s Performance Recognized by Prestigious German Journal

Hungary Today 2024.09.03.

Péter Gulácsi, the goalkeeper of the Hungarian national football team, put in a great performance against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday, writes Magyar Nemzet. The prestigious German magazine Kicker was also impressed by the RB Leipzig goalkeeper’s saves.

In the second round of the Bundesliga, the German top-flight football championship, defending champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s run was interrupted: although Xabi Alonso’s side led 2-1 at the break, Leipzig turned the tide in the second half to win 3-2 and leave the champions without a point after 35 unbeaten Bundesliga matches. Péter Gulácsi was one of RB Leipzig’s and the field’s best at the BayArena, making eight saves during the game.

The prestigious German magazine Kicker was also impressed by Gulácsi’s performance.

The paper gave the Hungarian goalkeeper a 1.5 rating (the best in Germany is a 1) and included him in the squad of exceptional players.

This is how the best team would line up, according to Kicker:

Péter Gulácsi (RB Leipzig) – Niklas Stark (SV Werder Bremen), Sebastiaan Bornauw (VfL Wolfsburg), Itakura Kó (Borussia Mönchengladbach) – Maximilian Arnold (VfL Wolfsburg), Kevin Kampl (RB Leipzig), Franck Honorat (Borussia Mönchengladbach), Paul Wanner (FC Heidenheim), Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt) – Loïs Openda (RB Leipzig), Hugo Ekitiké (Eintracht Frankfurt).

Gulácsi’s last losing Bundesliga match dates back to September 17, 2022. True, just over two weeks later he suffered a serious knee injury in the UEFA Champions League match against Celtic FC, and due to the long period of recovery, he only resumed his place in the starting line-up in RB Leipzig on February 4, 2024. Since then, however, Leipzig have not been beaten once in the league when the Hungarian national legionnaire has defended (Gulácsi was unavailable for their only defeat against FC Bayern München due to a muscle injury).

Including the winner matches before his anterior cruciate ligament injury, Gulácsi is now on a 16-match unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, with four draws and 12 wins to his name.

On Monday September 2, the Hungarian national football team will begin their preparations for the new season of the UEFA Nations League, starting this weekend. Péter Gulácsi, who also defended at the UEFA Euro 2024, will have two rivals for the goalkeeper post, with Marco Rossi counting on Dénes Dibusz, who defends for Ferencváros, and Balázs Tóth, who has transferred from Fehérvár to the English Blackburn Rovers FC. The national team will start on Saturday September 7 with a match against Germany, and next Tuesday September 10 when they host Bosnia.
