Giorgia Meloni Points to the European Commission’s “Harshness” towards Hungary

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.12.14.

Viktor Orbán’s stance on Ukraine’s accession to the EU is influenced by the European Commission’s harshness towards Hungary, which it does not show towards other Member States, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in her speech at the summit of EU heads of state and government in the Chamber of Deputies in Rome on Tuesday evening.

Giorgia Meloni emphasized that she was aware of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s views on Ukraine’s accession to the EU, which did not coincide with her own, but that she believed that the Hungarian Prime Minister’s views were determined by the rigidity and strictness of the European Commission.

The Italian head of government stated that her government was on Kiev’s side, but that the solution was not just financial support for Ukraine:

The consequences of the war must also be taken into account, as the conflict is already weighing on European public opinion.”

Giorgia Meloni recalled that her predecessor, Mario Draghi, who handed over the office of prime minister to Meloni last October, had traveled to Kiev on the train with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in June 2022. The three were photographed together in the train compartment.

“For some, foreign policy means taking a photo together with France and Germany, but not bringing home any results. Europe is not made up of three members, but twenty-seven, and you have to stay in touch with all of them:

I talk to Germany, I talk to France, but also to Hungary. That’s how I do my political work well,”

said Meloni in response to a question from Lia Quartapelle, member of the left-wing Democratic Party (PD) and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the lower house. Quartapelle called on Meloni to choose between Europe and Viktor Orbán, because one cannot be a friend of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Orbán at the same time.

Meloni reiterated that Rome also supports the accession of the candidate countries Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the EU as well as similar efforts by Georgia.

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian situation, the Italian Prime Minister said that the Palestinian Authority must not be further weakened, as otherwise it would be difficult to resume political and social reconstruction after the conflict. She added that the Jewish communities, which are “threatened by an ever-increasing wave of anti-Semitism,” must be given the strongest protection.
