Galatasaray Reach the Turkish Cup Final, with Sallai Scoring Spectacular Goals

Hungary Today 2025.04.23.

Galatasaray won 5-1 away to Konyaspor in the Turkish Cup semi-final on Tuesday, securing a place in the final with two goals from Hungarian international Roland Sallai.

The 27-year-old winger was given a start at right-back for the Istanbul side and scored in the 47th and 55th minutes. Record 18-time cup winners Galatasaray led 2-0 at half-time, Sallai scoring the team’s third and fourth goals, with Konyaspor grabbing the consolidation goal in between. The Hungarian international played the whole match.

In the other semi-final on Thursday, Trabzonspor and Göztepe will meet, with the final (the venue is not yet known) to be played on May 14.

“I think everyone performed well today and we got a deserved win. We want to continue like this. My own performance was also good,” Sallai assessed after the match, adding:

What I really want is to help the team. It can be right-back, left-back or midfield. I was able to score 2 goals because I played on the wing.”

Magyar Nemzet points out that with this statement Sallai may have expressed a veiled criticism of head coach Okan Buruk, who has repeatedly included him in the defensive line. It has recently emerged that Buruk had indicated to the club’s management that the Hungarian player could be sold in the summer because he had not lived up to expectations. The coach’s concern with the Hungarian player is said to be that he is not scoring goals, although that is not easy from the defensive line. However, Sallai was allowed to play in his original post yesterday and he got the result. He arrived from Freiburg in September last year and has scored three goals in 28 games until Tuesday, and now has two in one game.

Fact

Roland Sallai transferred to the Turkish Galatasaray in September 2024, signing a four-year contract. Transfermarkt put his market value at 15 million euros at the time, with the Turks buying him for a “bargain” price of 6 million euros. Since then, the market value of the 58-time international player has dropped to 11 million euros.
