Gábor Szalai Transfers to Swiss First League from Kecskemét

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.08.

Gábor Szalai, the Kecskemét TE (KTE) defender, will continue his career in the Swiss top-flight football club Lausanne-Sport. The departure of the national team player was announced on the official website of KTE.

“The club has signed a contract with Gábor until the summer of 2028, and has made a significant financial sacrifice to acquire him,” the player’s manager Péter Paunoch told M1 news channel.

The manager explained that there were several offers for Szalai, and a number of teams from the North American league was interested, but he wanted to join a strong Western European league, where he could move up a step and get a permanent playing opportunity, so that his development could remain uninterrupted.

The Swiss club is owned by the new co-owner of Manchester United, Jim Ratcliffe, and is a training club that tries to sell its players to top leagues after a year or two,”

said Peter Paunoch.

The manager added that thanks to the “extremely fair attitude” of the Kecskemét team,

the deal was done in just a day and a half and the player is already in his new team’s training camp near Barcelona, where he is scheduled to make his debut in Monday’s pre-season match.

The 23-year old football player made his debut for Kecskemét in 2019, when he was still in the national third division, and was first invited by national team captain Marco Rossi last summer, and although he has yet to make his debut, he has not missed a single appearance since. Paunoch said: “Szalai would have definitely wanted to stay in Rossi’s sights, because the most important goal is to qualify for the European Championship this summer.”

Szalai has played a total of 127 matches for KTE, scoring 22 goals. After 18 rounds, FC Lausanne-Sport is in 10th place in the 12-team Swiss league.
