Further Projects Discussed with Chinese Contractors of Budapest-Belgrade Railway

Hungary Today 2024.04.10.

The Minister of Construction and Transport has held talks with the heads of one of the largest Chinese companies involved in the Budapest-Belgrade railway project, Világgazdaság reports.

“The Budapest-Belgrade railway line is the flagship of Central European infrastructure investments,” Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár wrote on Facebook. He added that “by joining forces with the Chinese and Hungarian governments, Hungary will not only become the gateway to the Balkans and Western Europe, but will also provide Central European and Balkan countries with high-quality passenger transport connections.”

Today we discussed further cooperation opportunities with the leaders of one of the largest Chinese companies involved in the project,”

Lázár wrote.

A new, earlier date for the completion of the Hungarian section of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line has also been announced recently. Aleksandar Vučić gave an interview to the Chinese broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN) at the end of February, saying:

We are confident that our Hungarian friends will finish the Hungarian side by the end of 2025, or February-March 2026,”

so they can connect Belgrade with Budapest and Vienna.

This date is also significant, because until now a date of half a year later was mentioned. The Serbian President said last October that the Hungarian section of the Budapest-Belgrade line could be completed by summer 2026, at the latest.
