Fuel Prices Finally Take a Downward Spiral

Hungary Today 2025.02.20.

Fuel prices are expected to fall at domestic petrol stations in the second half of the week. The wholesale price of petrol will be 5 forints (0.012 euros) less gross, and the purchase price of diesel will be 3 forints (0.0074 euros) less gross from Thursday, fuel information website Holtankoljak.hu wrote in a Facebook post.

If these decreases are also applied by wells in their retail prices, average prices could fall further, Holtankoljak reports. The average prices on February 19, 2025 for 95-octane petrol were 628 forints (1.56 euros) per liter; for diesel 640 forints (1.59 euros) per liter.

Current prices have jumped back after a full week of fuel price falls earlier this week. Világgazdaság reported earlier that oil prices could remain stable or even fall slightly, and the gap between petrol and diesel prices could narrow.

In fact, both products may even become cheaper at domestic wells if the forint continues to strengthen,

according to Ottó Grád, secretary general of the Hungarian Petroleum Association, who was asked by Világgazdaság about the development of domestic fuel prices and the reasons for it.

At the beginning of the year, fuel prices rose dramatically in just a few weeks’ time. The data showed then that the price of both types of fuel had increased by approximately 20 forints (0.049 euros) in just over two weeks. In addition, the latest regional fuel price comparison by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office on January 6, showed that the average price of petrol in Hungary was 14 forints (0.034 euros) higher than the regional average, while the average price of diesel was 22 forints (0.054 euros) higher. Since then, the situation has somewhat improved, but there is still room for decrease.
