A ceremony on the 260th anniversary of the founding of the 3rd “Esterhazy” Hussars Regiment of the French Army took place in Metz, France, on March 21, with the participation of Hungarian soldiers. The event, attended by thousands of spectators, was held in the city’s main square.
According to honvedelem.hu, Hungary’s Ambassador to Paris, Georg von Habsburg, was joined by Captain Pál Bugnics Mike, representing the Minister of Defense, during the ceremony. Additionally, soldiers from the Ferenc Nádasdy Hussar Division of the Hungarian Defense Forces’ Sándor Szurmay Garrison Brigade were also present.

In a social media post related to the jubilee meeting, the Minister of Defense emphasized the significance of the hussar, stating:
The hussar is more than a soldier on horseback. The hussar is us, the essence of our national character in uniform.”
He highlighted Hungary’s contribution to the world through the Hungarian hussars, renowned across Europe and beyond for their virtues and distinctive uniforms.
Established in 1764 by Prince Bálint Miklós Esterhazy, the 3rd Hussar Regiment (3ème “Esterhazy” régiment de Hussards, 3e RH) has participated in numerous conflicts, including the Napoleonic Wars, both World Wars, and the colonial wars of the 20th century. The regiment’s service was recognized with the Croix de Guerre award.

Despite modernization, the “Esterhazy” Hussars maintain their adherence to hussar traditions, with cavalry training remaining integral to the regiment’s activities. It is noteworthy that until recently, having moustaches was compulsory for its members.
