From 1 March 2024, a completely new system will be launched to the discount scheme of MÁV (Hungarian State Railways). This is very good news for Hungarian minorities from neighboring countries.
In this context, 22 of the 65 types of discounts will be preserved, retaining the 50 percent discounts and eliminating the 20 and 30 percent ones, and the so-called stamp system will be discontinued.
All passengers under the age 14 and over 65 will travel free of charge, and all between the ages of 14 and 25 will receive a half-price ticket. In the future, education and health workers and public employees will be offered unlimited travel at a 50% discount. Public transport will be free of charge for those traveling with a 90% discount (e.g. large families, disabled people).
Thanks to the fare reform, the Hungarian Pass, previously allowing 4 free journeys per year, will allow unlimited free travel on interurban public transport for members of the Hungarian minority from neighboring countries.
Trains with seat reservation will be available by purchasing a reservation ticket, and selected national bus services will be available by obtaining a supplementary ticket.
