In recent weeks, it has been circulating on social media that airports, including Budapest Airport, can no longer store baggage left there unclaimed. Furthermore, they would sell the unclaimed suitcases for as little as HUF 729 (EUR 1.84). In response to a question from Világgazdaság, Budapest Airport said that this is a scam, by which fraudsters are trying to obtain the credit card details of internet users.
The company noted that this is not an isolated case, as similar posts have been published about other airports. Passengers are urged to be extra vigilant.
Budapest Airport added that such posts circulating on Hungarian social media are constantly reported to the operators of sites such as Facebook. Earlier, the airport also issued a statement drawing the attention of its customers to posts, phishing messages, and comments on social media with fake profiles.
It was stressed that Budapest Airport never asks for such sensitive data in the context of any prize competitions or promotions.
The airport also informed Világgazdaság that they are stepping up their efforts to combat fraud. Dedicated colleagues are working to identify fraudulent sites so that they can be dealt with as quickly as possible.
Similar websites have recently appeared in connection with other airports, hence passengers are urged to exercise caution,

In addition, to clarify the process, the company has explained that baggage left behind at the airport and not claimed are handled by ground handling staff. The aim is to return these bags to their owners as soon as possible.
