Formula 1: Two-star Sustainability Rating for the Hungaroring

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.09.10.

The Hungaroring has received a two-star sustainability rating from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile ( International Automobile Federation, FIA).

According to a statement issued by Hungaroring on Monday, the FIA “rates tracks with one, two or three stars based on the level of sustainability they have achieved,” and the Mogyoród track (near Budapest) received the two-star FIA environmental accreditation after the Hungarian Grand Prix 2024 at the end of July.

The statement highlighted that

the judging process looked at the Hungaroring’s day-to-day operations, facility management and event organization in terms of environmental objectives and processes such as energy, waste, water, soil pollution, procurement processes and air quality.

The track had to apply for the accreditation by submitting various documents online.

“It is important for our track to keep up with other venues around the world in everything, including sustainability. We are constantly striving to do so, and sustainability aspects were also important to us during the reconstruction until 2026,” the statement quoted Zsolt Gyulay, CEO of Hungaroring Sport Zrt.

Today, the Hungaroring is the second race track, alongside Monza (in Italy), to have hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix without interruption since 1986. The Hungaroring is currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation, during which the track and grandstands are being modernized.

The fully renovated facility is expected to host the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2026.

The development began immediately after the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix and is part of a larger renovation project costing HUF 105 billion (EUR 2.6 billion).
