“After successfully passing my theoretical and practical exams, I obtained a state-recognized professional certificate as a carpenter,” announced Judit Varga, former Justice Minister and now carpenter, on her social media page.

The 44-year-old former politician was State Secretary for European Union Relations at the Prime Minister’s Office from 2018 to 2019. She served as Hungary’s Minister of Justice from 2019 to 2023. From 2022 to 2024, she was a member of parliament for the Fidesz party.

In June 2023, she announced that she would resign from her ministerial position with effect from July 31st and that she would run for the 2024 European Parliament elections at the top of the Fidesz list. As a result of the pardon case, on February 10, 2024, she announced her resignation from her seat in the National Assembly and the leadership of the EP list, completely withdrawing from public life.

In March 2024, in an interview with Péter Hajdú, she said that she had enrolled in a carpentry training course. It seems that she plans to continue her activities in this sector: in 2024, she and her partner, László Windisch, registered Picidae Famíves Kft., of which she became the managing director.

I have reached the first milestone on a long journey,”

wrote the former minister, now a carpenter, on her social media page, thanking her teachers and classmates for the past 15 months.

“We learned about wood fibers and water-transporting cells, fungi and wood-boring beetles, deciduous and coniferous tree species, carpentry machines and hand tools, gluing and surface treatment. We did technical drawing, planing, panel making, sawing and carving for 15 months in both cold and hot weather, while also making a stool, a window frame, a toolbox and a bedside table,” she wrote.

Judit Varga also posted her exam piece, a TV cabinet with drawers, on her page.

“Of course, this is just the beginning. I know that from here on, there is still a lot of work ahead of me and at least 50 years of humble learning to truly master the carpentry trade with confidence. However, I have already taken the first step. Thank you very much for all the encouragement and good wishes!” Varga concluded her post.
