Former Captain Ádám Szalai Expresses Gratitude after Health Scare in Amsterdam

Hungary Today 2024.11.21.

Ádám Szalai, the former captain and current coach of the Hungarian national football team, has shared a heartfelt message thanking fans and supporters for their concern after his recent health scare. The incident occurred during Saturday’s Nations League match against the Netherlands, when Szalai fell ill on the bench just six minutes into the game. Following over ten minutes of on-field treatment, he was taken to a hospital in Amsterdam for further care.

By Sunday, Szalai had reassured everyone that he was feeling better, with head coach Marco Rossi confirming during a press conference that Szalai was recovering at home with his family, reports Index. Rossi added that Szalai would share details about his condition when he felt ready.

On Wednesday, Szalai addressed the situation in a Facebook post, expressing deep gratitude for the outpouring of support:

I would like to thank you for all the kind messages, encouragement, and love you have given me! I know that many of you thought of me and worried about me, sending me healing energy, for which I am very grateful.”

He went on to praise the swift and professional care he received, thanking both the Dutch and Hungarian football federations, as well as the staff at the Amsterdam hospital. He also expressed appreciation for the German Football Association’s supportive gestures during this challenging time.

Despite his health concerns, Szalai took time to congratulate the Hungarian national team for their hard-fought draw against Germany on Tuesday. The team secured a point with a dramatic 99th-minute penalty by Dominik Szoboszlai.

Szalai highlighted the critical role of fans in boosting the team’s morale: “Congratulations to the boys and the staff for doing well and scoring yesterday. It was not easy, but I know they fought for me. Thank you very much! I am grateful for the support of the fans, who have once again proven to be the 12th player and one of the most important parts of the team. We will continue next year! Go, Hungarians!”

Adding to the display of sportsmanship, German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann presented Marco Rossi with a special jersey dedicated to Ádám Szalai before the Hungary-Germany match.

The jersey bore the message, “Get well soon, Ádám,” showcasing camaraderie that transcends competition.

The Hungarian fans also cheered Szalai’s name throughout the match, a gesture that resonated with the former captain and underscored the unity within the national football community.
