Foreign Minister’s Stance on the EU’s Future: Community Rooted, Strong, and Sovereign Member States

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.05.03.

The upcoming EP elections hold significant importance for the European Union’s future trajectory, with the Hungarian government staunchly opposing federalist notions, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó conveyed during a symposium in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland.

He emphasized the preference for community rooted, strong, and sovereign Member States, rather than centralized federalism. Reflecting on Hungary’s historical context, Minister Szijjártó underscored the country’s transition from four decades of communist rule to its integration into Europe as a bastion of peace and prosperity, grounded in Christian heritage.

However, amid Europe’s current landscape, marked by war and a refugee crisis stemming from neighboring conflicts, Hungary advocates for a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine, adopting a minority position within the EU.

Péter Szijjártó highlighted the futility of warfare, stressing the imperative for negotiation to end the cycle of death and destruction.

Discussing Europe’s strategic future, the Minister highlighted the human toll of conflict, particularly among Hungary’s Transcarpathian community. He reiterated Hungary’s condemnation of the war and his personal efforts to address the crisis, emphasizing the need for courage in advocating peace.

Looking ahead to Hungary’s forthcoming EU presidency, Mr. Szijjártó outlined priorities, including expediting the Western Balkans’ accession process.

He emphasized the mutual benefits of enlargement for peace and development, proposing it as a means to revitalize the EU.

Minister Szijjártó pointed out the lengthy accession process faced by Western Balkan countries and warned of the erosion of the EU’s credibility if delays persist. He highlighted the EU’s strengthened position following the 2004 enlargement and suggested similar benefits for Western Balkan nations.

In conclusion, the Foreign Minister asserted that enlarging the EU would counter external influences, safeguarding European interests. This holistic approach, he argued, aligns with Hungary’s commitment to a stronger, sovereign EU.
