Foreign Minister Warns of Risk of Escalation in Ukraine and the Middle East

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.02.08.

Never before has there been such a risk of a third world war breaking out, and therefore the conflict in Ukraine must be brought to an end as soon as possible, and counter-terrorist operations in the Middle East must be brought to a successful conclusion, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó urged at the UN General Assembly session in New York.

The minister asked the secretary-general and the member states to do their utmost to avoid escalation in Ukraine and the Middle East, “because if any other country gets involved in any conflict, it will not stop at the borders of that country and the threat of a regional or even global war could become real.” He called the success of the anti-terrorist operations in Gaza a global interest and pointed out that the spread of fighting to Lebanon must be prevented, and that the Beirut government must be helped.

He stressed that

the UN’s most important task at the moment is to prevent the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East, as it was created to act as a platform between the hostile states.

On the war in Ukraine, he added that “our most important task as Europeans and NATO members is to prevent the outbreak of a possible NATO-Russia conflict that would obviously be tantamount to the outbreak of a third world war.”

Hungary pursues “a sincere, open, pro-peace foreign policy (…) that seeks mutual respect. That is why we can see that although we are members of the Western alliance systems, NATO, and the European Union, we can also talk to the countries of the East,” he underlined. “Hungary can be counted on as a reliable ally when it comes to standing up for peace, saving human lives, and fighting terrorist organizations,” he concluded.
