Foreign Minister Urges Diplomacy for Ukrainian Conflict Resolution

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.05.14.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó underscored the pressing need to resolve the conflict in Ukraine during a campaign event.

He emphasized Hungary’s direct exposure to the conflict’s repercussions, including casualties among the Transcarpathian Hungarian community.

The Minister criticized the prevailing “war psychosis” among European leaders, who misinterpret Ukraine’s conflict as a defense of Europe and democracy. He cautioned against escalating responses, such as arms deliveries and nuclear threats, stressing that diplomatic, not battlefield solutions, are paramount.

Péter Szijjártó suggested that the re-election of President Donald Trump in the U.S., and a potential right-wing shift in the European Parliament could facilitate a resolution to the conflict.

Regarding EU funds frozen to Hungary, he argued against the perception of these funds as charity, emphasizing their role in reciprocal economic agreements. He defended Hungary’s media freedom and criticized Brussels for withholding funds over disagreements on issues like the Child Protection Act.

Despite the funding freeze, Mr. Szijjártó highlighted Hungary’s economic resilience after the COVID pandemic, attributing it to effective domestic policies. He also addressed the competitive dynamics of investment from East Asia in Europe’s electric car sector, illustrating the complexity of global economic partnerships.
