Foreign Minister Urges Action to Prevent Escalation in the Middle East

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.08.06.

“The whole world, including us, is increasingly concerned about developments in the Middle East,” Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó wrote on his Facebook page.

On Monday, Mr. Szijjártó had a telephone conversation with his Israeli and Iranian counterparts, Yisrael Katz and Ali Bagheri Kani.

He noted that the talks “unfortunately proved once again that we are in the 11th hour.”

The Hungarian Foreign Minister emphasized that “everyone can be sure that if the current security crisis spreads to another country’s territory, it will not stop there. In that case, the conflict could easily escalate into a regional war, posing a threat to global security.” Péter Szijjártó urged the international community to focus all efforts on “preventing escalation”.

Fact

In 2024, the Iran-Israel conflict escalated into direct confrontation. On April 1, Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing a senior official. Iran responded by seizing the MSC Aries and launching rocket strikes on Israeli territory. Israel retaliated with strikes against Iran and Syria. Despite limited Israeli strikes and Iran’s non-response, tensions de-escalated. On July 31, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, following the killing of Hezbollah’s leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut, prompting Iran and Hezbollah to vow retaliation.
