The Foreign Minister traveled to Buenos Aires for talks with his Argentine counterpart, writes Index. Péter Szijjártó spoke about the Hungarian space program, nuclear energy, and reciprocal scholarships, while reporting on five agreements.
Strategic cooperation with Argentina will significantly strengthen Hungary’s position in the international political arena, the Hungarian politician announced in Buenos Aires.
Following his talks with his Argentine counterpart Gerardo Werthein, the minister stressed that there have been several important changes in world politics in recent times, and that the left has started to recede in several areas as a result of its failure in the fields of security and the economy.
“There are prominent players in the left’s regression and the right’s patriotic advance on almost every continent.
In Europe, the rise of patriots is identified with Hungary, and in South America, Argentina is the country that recently elected a leader committed to right-wing, conservative values,”
the Foreign Minister stressed, while also mentioning Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election.
“The approach of President Javier Milei to the issues that are currently challenging the world is very similar to our approach, whether it is sovereignty or the protection of the nation, the protection of families. We have similar, I would even say identical, positions in many cases. Therefore, we also have a strategic ally here in Latin America, and that is good news,” Péter Szijjártó noted.
There is also a committed right-wing, patriotic, conservative-led large country in Latin America that is a member of the G20.
Strategic cooperation with Argentina will therefore significantly strengthen Hungary’s position in the international political arena, he added, recalling that this year the two countries are celebrating the centenary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Mr. Szijjártó pointed out that five important agreements had been signed, which would give a new impetus to cooperation, especially as they involve today’s most modern and innovative industries, namely the space and nuclear industries. He stressed that the training of the Hungarian astronaut who will carry out important experiments on the International Space Station is already underway, which could give new motivation to the whole Hungarian sector and could lead to a good result if we can also link up with the Argentine space industry.
The politician underlined that both countries use nuclear energy and both are currently investing in nuclear power. He welcomed the fact that
Argentina is at the forefront of designing small modular reactors, which could also benefit Hungary.
The minister emphasized that energy could be a key area of cooperation beyond nuclear energy, as Argentina is home to one of the world’s richest sources of natural gas and oil. Negotiations are underway to use Hungarian technology to increase production by up to 20-30% in an environmentally friendly way.
He also announced that three agreements had also been signed to strengthen ties in the field of education: twenty-five Argentine students will continue to study at universities in Hungary on scholarships, a joint training program will be launched at the Hungarian Diplomatic Academy, and Hungarian language teaching will be started at one of Buenos Aires’ largest higher education institutions.
