In a letter, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó congratulated Geert Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), on his “landslide” election victory. He expressed his greetings to Wilders and hopes for a personal meeting between the two in the future, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In a letter of congratulations, the Hungarian politician said that the “landslide victory” of Geert Wilders and his party “proves that the issues raised by his political movement reach the heart of our society” and that the Dutch electorate also believes this.

You are undeniably a breath of fresh air in European politics,” he wrote, adding that cooperation could be further strengthened in the future.

The minister recalled that he had always enjoyed discussions with Wilders and expressed the hope that they would meet again soon.

In his reply, Wilders thanked Péter Szijjártó for his letter and added that he looked forward to a personal meeting between the two soon, either in Hungary or in the Netherlands.

The anti-immigration and Eurosceptic PVV led by Geert Wilders won at least 25 percent of the vote in Wednesday’s early elections, based on unofficial results. The PVV can now claim 37 of the 150 seats. The party has doubled its support compared to the last election in 2021.

The Dutch electoral council will publish the official results on December 1. The old parliament will resign on December 5 and the new MPs will take their oath on December 6.
