In a meeting in Manila, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo reaffirmed their stance on illegal migration, emphasizing it as a crime rather than a human right.

Minister Szijjártó highlighted the distinction between illegal migrants and those who legally travel for work, noting Hungary’s appreciation for over 10,000 Filipinos working in the country.

Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Hungary and the Philippines, Péter Szijjártó described this milestone as an opportunity for political discussions. The timing is significant as Hungary prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the European Union on July 1, amid global security and economic challenges.

Despite their geographical distance, both nations have been similarly impacted by recent crises.

They share a mutual interest in restoring global peace and balanced economic development, which Mr. Szijjártó argues requires a shift in international politics towards mutual respect and diplomacy, rather than condemnation and criticism.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister painted a bleak picture of Europe’s current state, citing two and a half years of war and efforts to obstruct East-West cooperation. He expressed the Hungarian EU Presidency’s commitment to improving Europe’s situation, focusing on peace.

The ministers also discussed the success of East-West cooperation between Hungary and the Philippines, highlighting a bilateral trade turnover exceeding USD 300M.

Hungary has increased its agricultural exports to the Philippines, and Hungarian companies are investing in water management to ensure access to drinking water. Additionally, there will be nuclear cooperation between the two countries. Education and tourism were also discussed. Hungary will provide scholarships for 35 Filipino students, and Filipino tourism in Hungary is on the rise, with tourists from the Philippines spending over 70,000 nights in Hungary.

This meeting underscores the deepening ties between Hungary and the Philippines and their shared commitment to addressing global challenges through cooperation and mutual respect.
