Foreign Minister Szijjártó Calls for Inclusive Peace Talks in Strasbourg

Hungary Today 2024.05.21.

In Strasbourg, there was an attempt to pass a resolution that would exclusively include Zelensky’s peace plan, reports Világgazdaság. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó vetoed it, asserting that rather than engaging in arms transfers and entertaining fantasies of nuclear war, what is needed is real peace talks.

Péter Szijjártó lamented that the European Council, with its potential as a platform for peace-building, had lost its opportunity following the exclusion of the Russians.

He emphasized that meaningful peace negotiations can only occur when all warring parties come to the table.

Moreover, the Minister highlighted that the Council had sought to adopt a resolution recognizing only President Zelensky’s peace plan, a move deemed unacceptable. He insisted that other peace proposals were equally viable, and requested their inclusion in the resolution, a request ultimately rejected by the majority, leading him to exercise his veto.

Moving forward, plans for a peace conference on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict in the summer are underway.

Switzerland will host the two-day high-level event, scheduled for June 15 and 16 at the Bürgenstock resort near Lucerne.

Notably, Russia will not be present, as it has not received an invitation. The Kremlin has dismissed the conference, asserting that without Russia’s involvement, no significant progress can be expected. Presidential Press Secretary of Ukraine, Dmitry Peskov, stressed that the initiative is unlikely to yield any meaningful results.
