In an interview with the Russian news agency TASS following the Atomexpo-2024 forum, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó outlined Hungary’s stance on resolving the Ukrainian crisis and addressed rumors concerning the delay of the Paks 2 nuclear power plant construction.

According to Magyar Nemzet, the Minister emphasized the effective cooperation between Hungary and Russia in the energy sector, stating: “Whether we like it or not, we have to admit that without Russian supplies, Hungary would not have a stable energy supply.”

Regarding the Paks 2 project, Mr. Szijjártó highlighted its significance, stating:

This will enable 70% of the country’s electricity consumption to be generated by nuclear energy.”

On the issue of peace and negotiations in the region, Minister Szijjártó expressed concerns about potential escalation, particularly in light of Sweden’s potential NATO accession, stating:

When it comes to troops entering Ukraine on behalf of some NATO member states, it is indeed dangerous.”

Regarding the seizure of Russian assets, Péter Szijjártó disagreed with the decision, citing concerns about its impact on Europe’s economy and investment climate. He underscored the importance of diplomatic engagement with Russia, mentioning ongoing high-level contacts.

Regarding Hungarian visas for Russian tourists, Szijjártó affirmed Hungary’s openness and tradition of welcoming Russian visitors without discrimination.

Overall, the interview portrayed Hungary’s commitment to pragmatic diplomacy and cooperation with Russia while maintaining a stance aligned with European stability and peace efforts.
