Foreign Minister Calls the Situation of Hungarians in Ukraine “Sad and Unacceptable”

Hungary Today 2025.05.29.

Speaking to Magyar Nemzet, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated that Ukraine has repeatedly violated the rights of the Hungarian national community over the past ten years.

“Each legislative amendment has further restricted the rights of Hungarians, especially in key areas of mother tongue use, such as education, public administration, and the media. This is unacceptable, ” Péter Szijjártó told the newspaper, adding that it is simply inexcusable for a country that wants to be a member of the European Union to violate one of the EU’s fundamental values, namely respect for the rights of national minorities.

In response to statements made by Roland Tseber, a politician who is linked to Péter Magyar, leader of main opposition party, Tisza, the Minister emphasized:

It is extremely sad that there are people who, as traitors, are trying to make the situation of Hungarians in Transcarpathia even more difficult.”

Fact

Amid rising ethnic tensions, Ukrainian media reports—including statements by Roland Tseber—have suggested that the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia (KMKSZ) could be banned. László Brenzovics, the association’s president, rejected these claims, stating that the KMKSZ operates fully within Ukrainian law, and to his knowledge, is not under investigation. Still, he warned of a broader anti-Hungarian campaign unfolding in Ukraine, which threatens the Hungarian minority’s rights and security.

“This is intolerable and it strengthens our resolve to stand up for Hungarians in Transcarpathia. It is also clear that Hungarians in Transcarpathia can rely only on us, on Fidesz, and on KDNP,” Szijjártó said of the past years when other Hungarian parties let down the Hungarian communities across the border.

Unfortunately, this is also the case now with the person mentioned and those associated with him,”

the Minister added.
