During a joint press conference in Copenhagen on Monday, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó emphasized Hungary and Denmark’s steadfast commitment to a strict immigration policy.

The Minister announced Hungary’s intent to prioritize the fight against migration during its upcoming EU Presidency, citing concerns over Europe’s declining security and competitiveness.

Péter Szijjártó underscored that without a stringent immigration policy,

Europe’s security would be compromised, as continued migration influxes could exacerbate security challenges, fuel organized crime, and heighten the threat of terrorism.

Hungary, he emphasized, is dedicated to a policy focused on robust border protection and preventing migration rather than managing it.

Moreover, Mr. Szijjártó highlighted the importance of providing support to address migration challenges at their source, particularly in regions like Africa where population growth is projected to surge in the coming decades. He warned of the urgent need to provide essential services such as jobs, healthcare, and education to avoid facing insurmountable challenges.

Commending Denmark’s migration policy as a beacon of common sense within the EU, the Minister pointed to Denmark’s strict measures and recent initiatives aimed at curbing migration. He also emphasized the shared export-oriented economies of Hungary and Denmark, advocating for unhindered, fair, and uniform global trade.

In this vein, he urged the EU to accelerate free trade negotiations, particularly with rapidly growing economies in Southeast Asia.

Stressing the importance of keeping trade discussions pragmatic and free from ideological entanglements, Szijjártó concluded by celebrating the flourishing economic cooperation between Hungary and Denmark.

He highlighted Danish companies’ significant presence as foreign investors in Hungary and the record-breaking bilateral trade volume of EUR 1.6B achieved last year, signaling a testament to the success of their partnership.
