Gábor Nyúl realized in February that the only division of Hungarian football in which he had not scored a goal was County III. However, after scoring multiple goals in County III, he has now achieved an extraordinary record.
“A friend and I were driving to a match when we started talking about who had scored goals where so far. I kept on listing them until I found out that I hadn’t scored in the lowest division. I thought, but it would be nice if I could do that one day. Now that I’m playing in Mezőmegyer, where our second team is in the lowest division, I looked to see when their game didn’t clash with ours and thought I’d play there and see if I could score,” the 37-year old player told sports daily Nemzeti Sport.
And he did: Nyúl played for the Mezőmegyer second team in the match against Pusztaföldvár, and he scored three goals in the 6-0 win.
“I went into the game knowing I had to score. Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait long for the first situation, I started an attack on the left-wing and after the ball came into the middle, I bounced the ball into the short corner.
I can’t deny it, I was as happy as if I’d scored in the top league. After the match, I got a lot of congratulations, and before I even got to the dressing room, I had dozens of messages,”
Nyúl said. He likes to look at the stats, and after doing his research, he realized that he is probably the only player in the country who has scored a goal in all divisions.
Nyúl, who is going to marry former volleyball player Barbara Bucsi, jokingly told Nemzeti Sport that “I said to Barbi after my goal, now that I have the full collection, she can safely marry me.”
