Football Club in Slovakia Reconnects with Their Hungarian Roots

Hungary Today 2025.02.20.

A touch of history will be wafting through AS Trenčín’s stadium next Saturday. In the home game of the Niké Liga against ŠK Slovan Bratislava, the team will be wearing a special jersey reminiscent of the club’s Hungarian roots.

On November 28, 1904, football enthusiasts met at Hotel Erzsébet (now Hotel Elizabeth) in Trenčín (Trencsén) and laid the foundations for a 120-year football tradition. This meeting gave rise to today’s AS Trenčín. The founding statutes were submitted in January 1905, and the club began its journey under the leadership of its first president, Árpád Motek, in the red and white city colors.

To mark its 120th anniversary, AS Trenčín is reviving the past,

according to the team’s website. After a gala evening last year, there is now another highlight: the team will be wearing an anniversary jersey on Saturday, reminiscent of the club’s beginnings.

The jersey is based on historical photos featuring red and white stripes, as well as the first crest of the Trenčín Gymnastics Club (Trencséni Torna Egyesület – TTE), which was designed by the founders in 1904, a special detail that emphasizes the club’s Hungarian roots and reflects the long and eventful history of AS Trenčín.
