Food Price Cap: Stores Must Display Government Price Freeze Logo

Hungary Today 2022.01.31.

Starting February 1st, domestic stores will be required to display an informational sign on their entrances to inform customers of the price freeze on seven staple foods. The government is providing a logo manual for this purpose.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on January 12th on his social media page that as a result of rising prices due to higher fuel costs, the government would maximize prices of granulated sugar, wheat flour, sunflower cooking oil, pork legs, chicken breast, and semi-skimmed cow’s milk to October 15, 2021 levels, starting February 1st. Later, chicken backs were added. Now, it was announced in the government’s official gazette, Magyar Közlöny, that stores must display a sign in their stores to inform their customers about the regulation. Accordingly, under the sign stating “price freeze,” must be the following text:

Dear customers! The government has decided to introduce a price freeze for basic foodstuffs. Accordingly, the prices of the affected products must be set so that they do not exceed those of October 15, 2021. The price freeze will apply from February 1, 2021 to May 1, 2022.”

The signs must be placed in a visible place in the stores and markets, and the regulation also applies to the shipping companies. They must display the logo on opening sheets. The observance of the regulation is strictly controlled; in case of failure to do so, the stores can be fined or closed.

The design manual can be downloaded from the government website, which includes different sizes, color codes, as well as fonts.

The appearance of the papers is reminiscent of those the government’s campaign billboards used in past years. A similar ‘stop’ logo was also used in the government’s “Stop Soros” campaign.

This is not the first time the government has issued such regulations: since the introduction of the ancillary cost reduction, energy suppliers have been required to display the extent of the reduction on their payslips. Banks have also been obliged to inform their customers about the credit moratorium introduced in the form of an attached text.
