Flight Trends Show Hungarians Embracing Distant Christmas Getaways

Hungary Today 2024.12.06.

Hungarians are much more likely to travel further afield over the Christmas period than at other times of the year, according to Kiwi.com booking data. The most popular destinations are Spain, Italy, and Germany, with London, Malta, and Copenhagen the most popular cities. Most people will leave just before New Year’s Eve on December 30, with most Hungarians living abroad arriving for the holidays on December 18, spending an average of 12 days at home.

Kiwi.com has looked at where most Hungarians will be flying to over the Christmas period, between 20 and 31 December, based on flight bookings made by November 28, 2024. They also looked at when and where Hungarians visiting Hungary from abroad are most likely to travel to the country for the holidays, reports Turizmus.com.

The data shows that Hungarians traveling over the winter holidays are most likely to board flights after Christmas on December 27, 28 and 30, and spend an average of seven days in their chosen destination.

Most people relax in Spain, Italy, or Germany, with the majority of city breaks in London, Malta, and Copenhagen, and the United States of America topping the list outside Europe.

  2. Italy
  3. Germany
  4. United Kingdom
  5. Denmark
  6. Malta
  7. France
  8. Portugal
  9. Switzerland
  10. Türkiye

Hungarians traveling from abroad typically fly home before the holidays and spend an average of 12 days at home, indicating that they live outside the country and come home for a longer holiday to visit family and friends.

Most people arrive on December 18 and 21 from London, Brussels, Copenhagen, Eindhoven, and Dublin.

The data also shows that Hungarians are most likely to travel with their partner (38%) and family (16%) over the Christmas holidays. By contrast, three quarters of Hungarians traveling from abroad are coming home alone for the holidays, according to booking data.

Another striking trend is the much higher proportion of bookings for long-haul destinations, i.e. destinations more than 4,000 km away, during the Christmas holidays. Based on bookings made by November 28 this year, these flights account for 13% in the last third of December, compared with an average share of 7%.

This means that those who choose to spend Christmas abroad are much more likely to choose a more distant destination than usual.

The average price of flights by distance between December 20 and 31 is as follows:

  • short haul, i.e. within 1,500 km (e.g. London, Malta, Copenhagen): HUF 50,000 (EUR 120)
  • medium destination, i.e. between 1,500 km and 4000 km (e.g. Dublin): HUF 98,000 (EUR 237)
  • Long destination, i.e. over 4,000 km (e.g. New York): HUF 333,000 (EUR 805)
