A traditional knights’ pilgrimage will be held between Báta (village in southern Hungary) and Mohács (town in southern Hungary on the right-hand bank of the Danube) on August 27th. The event, commemorating the Battle of Mohács, will be complemented by concerts and family programs.

The event, organized by the Historical War Academy Foundation, will start with a holy mass in the Holy Blood Church in Báta, a popular pilgrimage site, followed by the 26 kilometer tour.

In Mohács, family programs will be held in the evening, with performances by Hungarian bands, followed by a mass in the Church of the Assumption of the Hungarian Virgin Mary. Visitors will be able to see a life-size wooden statue of Christ crucified on a cross by sculptor Gergely Kolozsvári in the main square as well.

Afterwards, the knights who fell in Battle of Mohács will be commemorated with light painting and jousting.

The foundation intends to hold the Knights’ Pilgrimage every year until the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács.

In 1526, King Louis II and the leaders of the country held the last meeting of the National Council in Báta, before the Battle of Mohács, where the army marched into the fateful battle.

Fact

The Battle of Mohács was fought on August 29, 1526 near Mohács, between the forces of the Kingdom of Hungary and its allies, led by Louis II, and those of the Ottoman Empire, led by Suleiman the Magnificent. The Ottoman victory led to the partition of Hungary for several centuries between the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburg monarchy, and the Principality of Transylvania. The death of Louis II marked the end of the Jagiellonian dynasty in Hungary followed by the House of Habsburg.

More information about the August 27th program can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
