First State-funded Hungarian-Ukrainian School to Open in Budapest

Hungary Today 2024.08.07.

The first state-funded bilingual Hungarian-Ukrainian primary and secondary school in Budapest has been registered. The news was announced by the House of Ukrainian Traditions on its Facebook page.

During his recent visit to Kyiv, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán welcomed Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s initiative to open a Ukrainian school in Hungary. Mr. Orbán emphasized that there are a large number of Ukrainian refugees in Hungary and that it is necessary to teach them in their mother tongue, Karpat.in.ua writes.

There were already Ukrainians living in Hungary before, but now there are additional needs and these people must be taken care of,”

the Prime Minister said.

He pointed out that Ukrainian children were already being educated in a number of schools in Hungarian cities, including Budapest, and that this system was “working quite well,” but that Hungary also understood the need to establish a Ukrainian-language school.

The Hungarian state will take over the financing of this school. As many Ukrainian schools as necessary will be opened. It is important for us that Ukrainians feel at home in Hungary,”

noted the Hungarian Prime Minister after his meeting with the Ukrainian President.

The five-day school for grades 1-12 will offer a bilingual curriculum, highly qualified teachers and modern classrooms from the 2024-2025 academic year. Viktor Orbán did not link this decision to similar expectations in Ukraine, but said after the meeting that he expected Ukraine to understand the needs of the Hungarian-speaking minority in Transcarpathia, writes the portal.
