Fighter Jet Races against Formula Car at the Kecskemét Airbase

Hungary Today 2024.07.23.

A special video was filmed at the Kecskemét airbase (central Hungary), in which a Gripen fighter jet accelerated against a formula car. A Gripen was racing against a formula car built by the team of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), Baon.hu reports.

It is not unusual for the creative Formula 1 teams to delight fans with special videos. There are videos of various racing cars competing against F1 cars, and even a fighter jet has been used in drag racing against the world’s fastest racing cars, the portal recalls.

The Szentgyörgyi Dezső 101st Airborne Brigade of the Hungarian Defense Forces and BME have now also joined the trend:

in a short film shot with participants of the university’s Formula Student program, a Gripen at the Kecskemét airbase is pitted against the 2024 FRC-11, a Formula car built by BME students.

The video has been published on BME Motorsport’s Youtube channel:

BME Motorsport was founded at the end of 2018 with just 8 members at the Budapest university with the aim of providing an outstanding development and experience opportunity for young, talented students interested in motorsport.

The team is currently made up of 80 enthusiastic and dedicated students of engineering, economics, mathematics and business.

The program’s website reads that Formula Student is an international series of car and engineering competitions exclusively for university students, with a custom-built formula racing car at its heart. Teams from approximately 800 institutions participate in the international races each year. Although the machines built would be competent for serious racing with their 3-second acceleration to 100 km/h and very light carbon fiber chassis, Formula Student is primarily an engineering competition where students compete in dynamic events (on-track racing) as well as in a number of so-called static events (financial, documentation).
