The European Parliament voted on its proposals to reduce methane emissions from the energy sector on Tuesday. According to MEPs of Hungary’s governing Fidesz party, Edina Tóth and András Gyürk, the importance of reducing methane leakage is beyond debate, but the EP’s proposal would make it impossible to do so effectively.
The proposal threatens the security of energy supply, means higher costs, and increases the bureaucratic burden on businesses, the politicians warned in a statement.
During the debate on Monday, Edina Tóth stressed that “the reduction and metering measures being pushed by the left are excessively bureaucratic and could create a significant financial burden for companies and, by extension, for European families.” According to the Fidesz MEP,
András Gyürk noted that “the European energy sector accounts for around 1 percent of global methane emissions.” “Therefore, real climate protection requires broad international cooperation based on mutual respect, rather than absurd and lecturing proposals,” he added.
