FIDESZ MEPs Call on the EU to Fund Border Protection

Hungary Today 2023.03.29.

The European Parliament’s Budgets Committee (BUDG) voted on Tuesday on its plans for the EU budget for 2024, including the funding of border protection.

Fidesz MEP Andor Deli said it was outrageous that despite the will of the heads of state and government of the member states, “the left-wing parties in the Parliament continue to block support for border fences, thus preventing illegal migration”.

The vote has once again shown that the European left is firmly opposed to the use of EU funding to build fences at the EU’s external borders,

he said.

Andor Deli recalled that in the European Council made it clear that effective control of the EU’s external borders is important and that EU financial resources should be made available to support border protection capabilities and infrastructure. Fidesz MEPs will do their utmost to ensure that the necessary EU funds are made available as soon as possible, he added.

The Hungarian government has called on the European Commission on numerous occasions to financially contribute to the costs of border protection.
