European Parliament reshuffle could redefine the nature of European conservativismContinue reading
The approval of Olivér Várhelyi’s mandate as EU Commissioner has been delayed, despite his outstanding performance during the committee hearing, according to Fidesz MEP Csaba Dömötör.
Mr. Várhelyi, who has advocated for revitalizing EU pharmaceutical production and improving healthcare in Europe, is facing resistance from the European People’s Party (EPP) and the left-wing factions of the European Parliament. These groups are engaging in ideological warfare rather than assessing his qualifications, Mr. Dömötör argued.
The commissioner’s hearing, lasting three hours, showcased his thorough preparation and experience, addressing often personal questions from MEPs.
The delay in approving his mandate is seen by Csaba Dömötör as a result of a political bargain, with some in the EPP using the process to target Hungary for its stance on issues like migration and family policy. He described the opposition’s tactics as “undignified,” stressing that this was not about Olivér Várhelyi’s suitability, but about ideological opposition to Hungary’s policies.
Mr. Dömötör also criticized the EPP’s role in the process, accusing Manfred Weber of attacking Hungary out of personal animosity for being denied the European Commission presidency.
What we are witnessing is that the hearing of the commissioner-designate has been included in the instruments of pressure,”
he said.
Despite these challenges, he reaffirmed his support for Mr. Várhelyi, highlighting his qualifications and previous approval by the European Parliament. “Olivér Várhelyi has proven his worth for five years,” he emphasized. The Fidesz-KDNP delegation and the Patriots for Europe group will continue to support Mr. Várhelyi’s candidacy as another evaluation meeting approaches.
