Fidesz MEP Expresses Disquiet over EU Official Allegedly Accepting Bribes from Qatar

Hungary Today 2023.03.17.

Hungarian MEP Balázs Hidvéghi once again criticized the double standards surrounding the corruption scandal in the EU institutions.

“On at least nine occasions, the European Commission’s director general for transport has accepted expensive luxury air tickets from Qatar while negotiating a transport deal on behalf of the EU that benefits the country. What is this if not a textbook case of bribery?” Balázs Hidvéghi, MEP of Hungary’s governing Fidesz party pointed out in his speech in the plenary debate of the European Parliament on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Hidvéghi, the corruption scandal in Brussels continues to grow, involving not only the European Parliament but also the European Commission.

It is hypocritical and disingenuous that while this Parliament and the European Commission are attacking Hungary with all sorts of trumped-up accusations of the rule of law, the Brussels bureaucrats are swimming in systemic corruption,”

he said. The MEP underlined that this completely discredits the Brussels institutions’ investigation against Hungary. “I, therefore, call on you to sweep your own front door and leave Hungary alone,” concluded Balázs Hidvéghi.
