The derby between Újpest and Ferencváros, the 29th round of the OTP Bank Liga, will be played on Monday evening.
Stanislav Cherchesov, head coach of leaders Ferencváros, praised his team’s efficiency. “There were a few question marks before and during the game, Tokmac was struggling with a minor injury and then Kovacevic was injured in the game. We had to manage that so that we didn’t lose our game,” the Russian coach told M4 Sport.
The boys did a super job of implementing what I asked them to do. It was not our best game, but we were very efficient and smart. Újpest are in a good position, they played with confidence, and on top of that they gave everything at home and against us. But again, we did what we planned, I’m very happy we won.”
FTC will host Kisvárda in the next round on Saturday, knowing what second-placed Kecskemét played on Friday night. “Knowing the result, we might as well close the race,” said Cherchesov. “But I stress: it is not enough to order a win, you have to be prepared and work hard for success. We’ll see who I can count on from the injured, but I hope to put a winning team on the pitch.”
Újpest manager Nebojsa Vignjevic first congratulated Ferencváros on their victory, but he also said credit should go to his own players. “I think we played a very good game and a huge thank you to our fans, who encouraged us unstintingly throughout. I’m sorry we didn’t win this game today,” he said.
“We started the first half very well, but we lacked finishing, confidence in front of goal. Then we started the second half exactly the way we didn’t want to, we were slow, we started to show signs of fatigue, we started to lose territory, we started to give the ball away more and more easily. Ferencváros are a very dangerous team, the best team in the Hungarian league, with players of excellent quality, if we give them a chance they punish us severely. The result is annoying, I feel we deserved at least one point based on our performance.”
