The Szolnok Day series of events, running until Saturday, will offer family and cultural programs, exhibitions, and concerts in the city with county rights located on the banks of the Tisza river, in the heart of the Great Hungarian Plain.

The Budapest-Cegléd-Szolnok railway line opened on September 1, 1847. In honor of this historic date, Szolnok Day is held every year. In keeping with tradition, local civil society organizations, service providers, voluntary groups and partners will be given the opportunity to present their work, and the city’s most prestigious awards, the Silver Pelican Award and the title of Citizen of Szolnok, will be presented during a ceremony.

The program started on Sunday with a St. Hubert’s mass in the Great Downtown Church with horn bands performing in the streets and squares of Szolnok.

Fact

St. Hubert or Hubert (cca. 656 – May 30, 727, Tervuren, German Lowlands) is the patron saint of hunters, foresters, and rifle guilds. Before his conversion, Saint Hubert led a dissolute life, including partying and hunting. One day he saw the cross among the horns of a deer, converted, became a bishop and the patron saint of hunters. Since the change of regime, there has been an effort to establish the cult of St. Hubertus in Hungary. On his name day or at the beginning of the hunting season, Hubertus masses are held across the country.
