Families Are the Pillars of Hungary’s National Sovereignty, Says Minister

Hungary Today 2022.07.08.

Families are the pillars of our national sovereignty, “so the government is doing everything in its power to protect these traditional communities with every new law and decision,” the Justice Minister said on her Facebook page on Thursday.

The Civil Working Group on Family Rights held another meeting on Thursday, in which the Ministry of Justice is in contact with more than sixty NGOs, Judit Varga wrote in her post.

It is of particular importance for the government to maintain a constructive exchange of views with civil society actors and public authorities, the minister stressed.

“We all share a common concern to protect the interests of vulnerable groups, including primarily underage children,” she emphasized. The working group meeting reviewed the legislative achievements of the past two years in the field of family law and outlined the main tasks for the next period.

Among these, particular attention was paid to the new legislation on the hearing of children with the ability of discretion of judgment, and to the experience gained so far in the application of the law on shared parental custody and alternating care.

The meeting also discussed the problems in the implementation of the law, which the minister believes could be addressed by the procedural fast-track package currently being discussed by Parliament.

These amendments could speed up all family law cases where the court decides on an issue involving a minor and could also help with procedural problems in cross-border family law cases, he added.

“We will continue our work in which we have offered partnership to all well-meaning NGOs,” Judit Varga said, adding that Ministerial Commissioner Zsuzsa Wopera will continue to work to maintain effective cooperation and dialogue. “For us, the protection of Hungarian families and children comes first,” the Justice Minister concluded.
