Fábián Marozsán Defeats U.S. Open Champion at the Australian Tournament

Hungary Today 2024.01.15.

In the first round of the main draw of the Australian Open, Hungary’s number one men’s tennis player, Fábián Marozsán (ATP 67), defeated former U.S. Open champion Marin Čilić in four sets. Marozsán’s opponent in the second round will be 22nd seed Francisco Cerundolo, reports Index.

The two players have never met before, which is why it was uncertain what Hungary’s best men’s tennis player could expect against former U.S. Open champion Marin Čilić. Čilić won the U.S. Open 10 years ago in 2014.

True, the Croatian server was nowhere near his old form, but despite his 35 years of age, he still confidently won his first service game.

However, Marozsán played almost exclusively to hit every ball into his opponent’s court, and that proved to be enough to give him a break point. Moreover, the Croatian player continued to make a lot of errors, resulting in him losing his service game again, while Marozsán remained immaculate behind his own serves, and after only 28 minutes of play, the Hungarian tennis player won the first set 6:1.

Marozsán was very confident behind his serves, and in the middle of the fourth set, there was a service game which the Hungarian player won in less than a minute. As the players went into the end of the set, the pressure on the Croatian rival increased. At 5:4, Čilić was serving to stay in the match, which he finally managed, but Marozsán’s next service game was again excellent.

The results of the four rounds: 6:1, 2:6, 6:2, 7:5.

The Hungarian number one has now reached the first main draw of his career at the Australian Open and will face 22nd seed Francisco Cerundolo in the second round.

As for other Hungarian players, Márton Fucsovics and Máté Valkusz are still in the top 128 in the men’s field. The former will take on 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov, while Valkusz will face Max Purcell on Tuesday.
